The Anaheim Ducks managed to extend their winning streak to three games last night, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2.
In a matchup of two of the league’s worst teams, the Ducks had to battle back after going down early. The Blackhawks had some early power play opportunities and managed to open the scoring about five minutes in, with Tyler Johnson beating Lukas Dostal with a nice shot. Then later in the frame, Chicago had a good opportunity to extend the lead, but Cam Fowler made a great play to get back and break up the pass. As a result, the Ducks were able to go right back the other way and Troy Terry fed Isac Lundestrom, who beat Petr Mrazek to tie the game. Anaheim then managed to pull ahead on a power play of their own, with John Klingberg finding Jakob Silfverberg in front with a great pass for a deflection.
The Blackhawks did capitalize for a second power play goal late in the second frame, but once again, the Ducks struck in the final minute of the period. Mason McTavish came in with possession and got the puck to Max Jones in the slot, who beat Mrazek with a well-placed shot to put the Ducks back ahead through 40 minutes. The third period then belonged to the Ducks, as Troy Terry scored to extend the lead and Anaheim outshot Chicago 12-4 in the final frame, on route to the 4-2 win.
Even though gaining ground in the standings against the Blackhawks is a little bit counterproductive in the long run, it’s good to see the Ducks having a bit of success. Not only that, but this was the first victory of the three-game win streak where they didn’t really rely on their netminder to make the difference.
That said, it was an important win for Lukas Dostal. The young netminder was lit up in his two games since being recalled, so putting together a good game for a win was a nice step.
DUCKS TRADE THRUN
In other news, the Ducks also completed a trade today, sending defenseman Henry Thrun to the San Jose Sharks for a third-round pick in 2024.
Thrun was selected by the Ducks in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Since then, he’s gone on to be a standout with Harvard in the NCAA. He had previously informed the Ducks that he wouldn’t be signing with the team.
Considering he’s a prospect who’s about to turn 22 years old, it’s a fine return for the Ducks. They’re getting a better pick than where they drafted him in the first place. While he does have potential, there are still a lot of really promising left-handed defense prospects within the organization and given where the Sharks are at right as a team, it’s likely to be a pretty early third rounder as well.
Anaheim also made a waiver claim, picking up Scott Harrington from the New Jersey Devils. Harrington had just been acquired by the Devils as part of the Timo Meier trade, but did spend 28 games in the NHL with the Sharks this season. Harrington is 29 years old and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
