The Los Angeles Kings acquired goalie Erik Portillo from the Buffalo Sabres yesterday, in exchange for a third-round pick in this year’s draft.

Portillo was selected by the Sabres in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft. The netminder is 22 years old and is with the University of Michigan for his third straight season, posting a .908 save percentage in 31 games this year.

While his numbers have slipped a bit this season, Portillo has a great opportunity with Los Angeles. There’s no clear ‘goalie of the future’ within the organization right now and clearly, the Kings have faith in him if they were willing to give up a quality pick.

Speaking of goalies: in a bit of a turn of events, Jonathan Quick is now a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Just a day after Quick was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets, he was quickly flipped to the Golden Knights (with half his salary retained). Vegas has dealt with huge injury issues to their netminders, with five NHL-level goalies on their roster right now. Given the injuries, we’ll see how much of an opportunity Quick gets. Obviously, him ending up with a division rival has a bit of karma to it, but for Quick, he gets to join a good team for a playoff run.

We’re quickly approaching the deadline now, but we’ll see if the Kings have any moves left following tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens.
