Former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas released a statement via his Twitter feed on Tuesday, his first since being dismissed on Friday after nine seasons with the club.

In the statement, Dubas referred to his need to “assess and evaluate my own view to the future, both with respect to the necessary direction of the club and ensuring that I had the full support of my family for what I knew would be required in the offseason and the years to follow.”

This would seem to go along with the report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that Dubas wanted to streamline the decision-making process and from The Athletic’s James Mirtle that Team President Brendan Shanahan had blocked transactions that Dubas wanted to make at key points.

This bureaucratic resistance is something that the next Leafs GM will have to deal with and perhaps someone with more experience will be able to navigate these waters more adroitly, but the autonomy that some NHL GMs enjoy with a singular owner is something that Toronto does not have with the MLSE Board comprised of Bell, Rogers, and Larry Tanenbaum.

The exodus from the Leafs organization started with Dubas, Toronto Marlies head coach Greg Moore, assistants A.J. MacLean and John Snowden, and the resignation of special assistant Jason Spezza on Friday, but soon may include Spencer Carbery.

According to Tarik El-Bashir of the Athletic, the Leafs assistant coach interview for the head coaching of the Washington Capitals on Monday.

Carbery was formerly in the Capitals system as head coach of the Hershey Bears, where he won AHL coach of the year before joining Sheldon Keefe’s staff in 2021. The 41-year-old is reportedly in the mix for head coaching openings in Anaheim and New York, but there has not been any indication if he would be a candidate for the Leafs job if Keefe is dismissed.
