The Toronto Maple Leafs search for a new general manager is something they would prefer to get done in short order and according to a report, the club may be leaning towards a GM who has been out of work for less than a month.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that former Calgary GM Brad Treliving, with whom the Flames mutually agreed to part ways with last month, is high on the list of options for the Leafs job and that he will be in Toronto this week to meet with the club. St. Louis reporter Andy Strickland went as far as to say that the job was Treliving’s to lose, but there is expected to be a wide-ranging amount of applicants for what is considered one of the most high-profile managerial jobs in the NHL.

Speculation about interest in Blues GM Doug Armstrong has continued, in spite of the fact that he is under contract with St. Louis for another three seasons, but according to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the interest on the part of Armstrong or Toronto is a “fabrication”.

Friedman also mentioned former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis and former Montreal Asst. GM Scott Mellanby as other possible options.

Treliving would seem to fit most if not all of the prerequisites that Shanahan said he was looking for, with his nine seasons of experience in a Canadian market, his reputation in the league, and the ability to make big decisions (trading Matthew Tkachuk after the winger informed the Flames he would not re-sign with them), but as we know Toronto is different than Calgary.

The Leafs are not going to make a hasty decision and it is most important for Shanahan to get the choice right since his handling of the Dubas situation casts doubt on his presidency, but with five weeks to go until July 1 and with three-quarters of the core group having no-trade or no-move clauses kicking in on that day, the sooner they get a new GM in place the better.
