The group that operates the Ottawa Senators says it is "actively considering" whether to submit a proposal to the National Capital Commission to build an arena at LeBreton Flats.

I would be very happy were this to happen.

BUT, we all know there are four levels of bureaucracy that would be involved, and the red tape cutting could easily drown such a project.

Until I hear that it's happening, I can only assume it's not. But it's fun to imagine if we had one of those cool downtowns like other cities have...

Hey Guys, I'm "new" to the Ottawa area (just over 3 months). What would be the benefits of moving the arena down there? I mean, they just "finished" highway improvements. So far, the only thing I can see benefiting the existing arena would be changing the way people can exit the parking lot.

The benefits for the Senators? Additional private funds (groups like OSEG contributing to the area), potential for a casino, the opportunity to bring in more fans from Gatineau, indeed easier access to the arena from places like Orleans and beyond, and access to the typical Ottawa "walk-up" crowd that the RedBlacks (and Renegades/Riders before them) enjoyed. For the city, it would bring a real change to our downtown core - maybe give us the chance to shed some of our Government Town mentality and bring some events into the core. It would be a great indoor venue for shows, I would think.

These are all off the top of my under-caffeinated head, and the smarter posters (ie. anyone but prock) can probably provide a better list than I...

The Highway (417) upgrade was not just done to accommodate events at the CTC, its was done in part for it, but mostly for the commuters that come and go to Carleton Place, Arnprior and points in between.

The CTC is not going to last forever, and with the Glacial speed that the four levels of Government involved move, it makes sense to get things started as Lebreton Flats sat empty for 50 years while politicians and bureaucrats came and went, and did SFA with this prime location.

Thanks guys! I'm all onboard the Lebreton Flats arena side. One other aspect would be the value to the nightlife with the given proximity. After a concert/event/game (especially a weekend event), more people would be closer to the downtown area for post event drinks.

And think of the playoff crowd. The red mile would be even bigger than it was back when it happened!

Things might evolve if the Team re-located to an Arena at Lebreton Flats. The current "Red Mile" on Elgin street would most likely remain, but given the proximity, Preston Street might become the go to place for pre and post game drinks and dining.

I haven't heard of preston street yet. I guess it'll take some time. Doesn't help when you live in Riverside South and work in Russell!

I'm very excited for the LRT to be built. Nice contract by Ellis-Don. PCL has a few nice contracts as well in the core area.

IN my opinion, the LRT aka streetcar, is a big mistake. For half the money they're scheduled to spend, all they needed to do was dig the tunnel, put in more stations in the downtown core, and expand on what is an excellent BRT.

For someone heading from my neighbour today, to tunneys pasture, it's one bus door to door.

With LRT, it's gonna take longer to get to the same destination, because of a transfer at Ottawa U. Plus an LRT will not take more buses off the downtown streets than a BRT would, as ALL buses would be able to use the tunnel, not just the streetcar.

recent reports say that a new arena will be key to whether or not the team stays in Ottawa!!!!

I wonder where they might move.
