yes he should have zero input. As he is not familiar with them really at all. Was he out scouting them? Add to the fact that he will very likely not be the coach when they arrive.

Can you give me any examples of coaches having input in a teams draft?

Yes it is dysfunctional that the coach will have say in the draft and tell the GM who he wants. That is ass backwards

Agree 100%

A current coach should have little to no say on drafting a player who most likely wont be playing for the team for 2 or 3 years or longer. That coach statistically wont even be with the team by the time that kid is in the league.

I would be surprised if some of those players werent traded. Almost as surprised if all of them were traded.

A lot will come down to cap space and need as it always does with the OTHER teams. My hope is that Briere just doesn't have a sale for the sake of having a sale. Especially for guys with multiple years left. For example, I do think trading Konecny is the right thing to do. But do you try to do it now or wait for next season when he is a free agent to be? Same with Provy etc.

They may get a better deal now for the other team has cost certainty. Or waiting they get a better return at a deadline.

I hope they figure out which is better.

Cap space really isn’t an issue around draft time. Teams have summer overage and can easily move pieces to make room. Tk at 5 mil is very attractive to a contending team. His value is at its highest. Obviously you don’t just throw him away. But if you get offered a first you jump on it. Maybe even if you get offered 2 2nds

Anything less than a first and something else I am probably walking from any Provorov or TK deal. Unless the first is top 10 or something.

Have to get quality value or why move them. Cap space in the summer is absolutely an issue. The cap is very tight for most teams. Teams aren't going to put themselves in a cap jam by using the overage to spend cap space they don't really have.

I am fine taking back a salary if required to enhance the potential assets. I envision a Brayden Schenn type trade for both. If the Flyers can get two top level (first round pick, top prospect) assets each for both TK and Provy that is the goal.

Based on listening to Briere this morning. Have you given up on your fantasy belief of the Flyers trading up into the top 3?
- MJL

I don't think it's a fantasy at all, but what it does sound to me like is Briere is not willing to trade what he has to to move up to 3. Perhaps he doesn't have the stomach for it, or perhaps he and his scouts have determined its not worth it, or specifically Carlsson is not worth it. Maybe Briere feels like he can get his future 1C at 7. If so I hope he is right.

I am not suggesting that Torts should tell Briere who he wants. However if there are, say, 3 players that Briere and his scouts all score around the same value, Torts might have some input into what style or type of player he thinks would fit best into the standard he is setting with the team. If I were Briere I would want to be on the same page with my coach in this regard before I start picking players.

It's complete fantasy. Briere knows that he does not have the assets to trade up to #3.

If I was Briere, I would realize that the more and faster I move away from what Tortorella wants. The better chance I would have of succeeding as the GM.
