Tulsky holds a B.A. in chemistry and physics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from UC-Berkeley. His resume also includes a two-year, post-doctoral study at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C., and a 12-year career in nanotechnology, in which his research enabled unique nanotech solutions to problems in DNA sequencing, solar energy, displays and energy storage. It would be accurate to suggest that Tulsky, prior to diving into the world of hockey analytics, was conducting life-changing research.

I mean . . . if he can win a Stanley Cup in Toronto he would change a lot of lives.

Sounds like a perfect candidate to be AGM #8 under Chiarelli.

Brendan Shanahan is not a serious or even reputable person.

His patents and published research have been cited in scientific publications nearly 600 times in the last 20~ years.

He holds 19 US patents, most of them for various types of nanocrystals.

Could Shanny have unintentionally Jedi mind trick'd himself here.

By firing Dubas and his so called handling of this "search" for a new GM - he could be exposing himself as the weak link in this entire chain of command mngmnt structure.

I wanted to say just how average that is...

I actually got chunks of that - might be small; but chunks no less

Well now, if you'd put Lums and mine together...

It’s pretty bad. The same people who wanted Dubas gone are going to despise the new guy.
- shack67

You may be right. The management of this team has been poor for a looooong time. The way the Dubas-Shanahan thing ended last week was bush league all around. 👎

There’s an old saying that says if you threaten to quit your job you better be able to live with the consequences. I like Dubas but he blew it.

Leafs should be fine as long as they go another year with no serious injuries, sell what ever they have left for rentals and their fans continue to be passionate narcissistic troopers.

They were right there, just a lucky bounce away. Keep doing what works.

Or Shanahan could use the Philly model. Hire booze guzzling former players and that sign POS fourth liners like Hayes for $7M +(he was only -22) or how about 7 more seasons of Sean Couturier at $7.75M - he's actually scored a whopping 117 points over the last three seasons, and he's only 30 years old. It will surely help the Flyers make the playoffs twice every seven years and manage to spend to the cap.

Too bad he couldn't fix Svechnikov for the playoffs.

I would NOT follow the Philly model because it sucks. They have only been to the 2nd round ONCE in the last 4 years and only 4 times in the last 14 years...absolutely disgraceful and humiliating. No fan of any team should have to go through that.

On the bright side the flyers have no hope of making it to the playoffs for some time. Vegas has them finishing about 25th in the NHL next season. Maybe Haynes will only be a -15 and Couturier can score 40 points.

Enjoy that playoff success

With Bob taking the Panthers to the finals and Price taking mtl to the finals. Are 10 million dollar goalies worth it? Is 7 x 10 worth it just for the chance at the cup?

Oh man we agree.

If it were another team we would all be laughing at the circus that was last week.

I assume these are one size fits all bags. I'll need a couple if Bergy or Chiarelli are serious candidates.

Seems like Fletcher and Hextall both followed that same model. Must be some kind of crazy in the Philly water.

(frank)in’ nerd.

We just had a nerd and he didn’t build a winner with his fake glasses.

The whole thing has been utterly insane and really badly timed here given everything that has to be handled too. It's bad optics and really does hurt the team and its reputation that had been built up.

Options like the old boys network Chiapet and Bergevin should NOT even be considered

Treliving is kind of meh, I would be curious on Botteril though since he moved on and has been over with the Kraken. Both these two had rough goes, but then circumstances and ownership etc likely were not the best at all either. In the MLSE environment with the support and scouting and financials behind them they could do better.

I really don't know if there is anyone that is just a clear cut winner type pick you can say would be better and we are set there.

Going to be an interesting offseason here.

I feel the same as you about Treliving.. He is meh but seems to be the best of the bunch that has experience..I would try to get Poile out of retirement...Botterill was pretty terrible in Buffalo...Want nothing to do with the retreads of Bergevin or Chirelli...At this point seeing who is there with experience I think I would rather another young guy like Tlusky or maybe give Futa.. Brandon Pridham has been here for a long time but I just don't know anything about him.

Bettman and Walsh (NHL PA) are gearing up for meetings to decide on a 6% cap increase for this year and the next two years following. It will move the cap up into the $100m range. Bettman has further hinted that the cap could be further increased if the PA agrees to an 84 game regular season with a shorter pre season.

The increases in cap along with the expiration of Tavares contract (2 years) suggests the Leaf should have about $30m in cap space for their long term planning. It would be silly not to try and keep Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

The math is pretty simple. If you give the big 3 an average increase of 20% on their current deals (making Mathews highest paid NHL player at $13.8m.) you will have more than $20m remaining (after Tavares) to add more depth into the roster.
