As has been discussed many times - Bettman's primary motivation in team locations is mining potential new TV markets. For better or for worse, Quebec has basically been mined. There are very few potential new hockey TV viewers there. It's unfortunate because they built a nice arena and would likely have good fan support. But butts in seats is not what's driving Bettman. He sees the TV contracts that the other major sports have and dreams of having a vague approximation of them for the NHL.

Less than 10% of the NFL's total revenues come from ticket sales. The NHL will never get there but that's what drives Bettman's thinking.

Bettman already said the team is to stay in Ottawa, BOG are not interested in moving it, they get paid in US dollars so they are happy

Have to agree with this. Bettman could have moved the Sabres years ago when the Rigas family went down with Adelphia Cable; however, he made a commitment to the market and found an owner who would stay in a small market.

Ottawa quietly building a pretty good team, be a shame to move them.

I personally feel we need to keep the Sens on Ottawa and move another team to Quebec. WE MUST return the NHL to Quebec.
- Eklund

Pretty sure there's already a team in Quebec, Ek.

The sale of the team is contingent on keeping the team in Ottawa.

So Edmonton is going to end with 111 points, even though that isnt possible, finishing the season 49 - 25 - 7, which only adds up to 105 points, not to mention the Oilers currently have 8 OTL, so are they getting an OTL turned into a win? Not to mention that record is only 81 games.

The chance of Quebec City getting a team is less than zero. Zero because...there's NO chance.
Less than zero because of the annoyance of outside people continuing to bring this up.

There's not enough money commited up front, barely a dozen commitments for loges, and a poor economy and lower standard of living.

The small group of hockey fans in Quebec City are some of the best and most hockey passionate people...there just aren't enough of them.

People always re-ignite this story because of the world class arena they have (it really is great). But if you think about it, it has been there for many many years and still no team...because it won't work.

The national capital region of Ottawa/Gatineau is double the size of Quebec City. Ottawa has the highest per capita income of any Canadian city. Pre-Melnyk, there were years where Ottawa led the NHL in average attendance.

Love Quebec City. But you would need to be business foolish to buy something in a fire hot market and move it into a new situation that remains highly dubious is terms of its business viability.

Only someone who hasn’t followed this story would write that they think the team may move to Quebec. The condition of the sale set by the NHL is that it remains in Ottawa, regardless of what happens with Lebreton. If your site actually had a blogger from Ottawa, you would have known that.

Finally though...some people starting to see that the move to a new down town rink is complete LUNACY. Oh, and I'd love to see a survey of actual season ticket holders and paying fans compared to media regarding Ryan Reynolds. Fans don't care. Ottawa media pretty much in stockings and garter belts for this guy. Enjoy the visual of Garrioch.

I get it. He's a great philanthropist and seems pretty savvy with business buying low and selling high. And he's taken some 16th tier soccer team to the "next level" ooo la la, but he's still in it for business. Give him a year or two and he's selling his share in that team--guaranteed. I want an owner who's in it for the long haul. I don't need some here today, gone today celebrity owner. Next thing you know he'll be watching that Gweneth Paltrow trial and buy 30% of Goop when the stock drops.

This should be a simple fix for the NHL. Leave the Sens in Ottawa and move Arizona to Quebec.
This won't happen because the league would rather use money to prop up the Coyotes rather than play in real hockey markets.
