Flyers Daily: 10 Questions for 2023-24 Season
Jason Myrtetus came up with a list of 10 questions facing the Flyers for the 2023-24 season. On the weekly "Mondays with Meltzer" episodes of the Flyers Daily podcast on the Flyers Broadcast network, Jason and I will go through each question in some depth. In this week's edition, we discuss the following topics:
* Samuel Ersson, Cal Petersen, and Felix Sandström: What is the outlook for each goaltender heading into camp? Where is each player on the depth chart at present? If the IIHF rules in the Flyers' favor in the dispute over whether the Flyers' tolled contract with Ivan Fedotov is still valid and enforceable for 2023-24, what does it mean for Sandström in particular?
* The Flyers need bounceback seasons from both Travis Sanheim and Joel Farabee. To what extent can the Flyers expect Sanheim to step up after the Ivan Provorov trade? Farabee seemed to be getting back to form in March and April this past season after undergoing offseason neck surgery last summer. Sanheim was nearly traded in the offseason before his new eight-year contract (with a full no-trade clause for the first four years) kicked in on July 1.
* How much will the returns of Sean Couturier and Cam Atkinson assist in the dressing room leadership aspect? Can Travis Konecny continue to grow into a team leader and he started to do this past season? Who, if anyone, will assume the mantle of blueline leadership? Among the players age 25 and younger, who (if anyone) are the leadership group candidates?
We'll tackle three more questions next Monday. For this week's episode, prior the aforementioned questions segment, Jason and I talked about Matvei Michkov's move to center in the KHL and the two-season contract extension to which the Flyers signed Ersson over the weekend.
