The implication was that even if the games in hand were different, that factor alone should not indicate to anyone who's bound to finish higher or lower.
- Morris

I don't know if his brain can process logic, to be honest.

I think we need to start dissecting how the liberal/reptillian/jewish kabal is actually responsible for everything bad.

I know this probably isn't the best place to post this, but how certain are people that the Leafs HAVE blown their shot at the playoffs? They're not THAT far out yet, and if they can halt the slide with a couple of quick wins I don't know that passing Washington and Detroit is really out of the question...

Have you Leafs goofs given up on the season? Too early for that, isn't it?

I don't see Detroit (frank)ing it up at this point. They'll get in. Nyquist is ballin.

On one hand, the playoff chances get more and more volatile as you get closer and closer to the end of the season. Think about a "win and they're in" team: losing a single game could represent a swing of up to 100%.

On the other hand, their chances are quite low now. They need some help for sure.

I never stated once, that when placing a bet (as described) that looking at games in hand should be the only factor.

But, you did not even consider game played when you listed of things to take into consideration.

No, my hard headed friend. But when you're in a race for the final playoff spot, having more games to play really helps, if the other team has fewer.

Detroit had two games in hand (on toronto) before they took to the ice last night. Do you honesty think that they did not see a chance to put more space between themselves and the leafs, knowing there was nothing the leaf could do about it?

They won the game in hand last night, and did increase their lead on the leafs, and have one more game in hand on the leafs. The Wings are in the drivers seat, they control their destiny and do not need any help. All they have to do is accumulate 8 points in their remaining 7 games, and the leafs cannot catch them.

Oh and for every point the leafs fail to gain, the fewer the Wings need to accumulate.

Of the leafs remaining games, first three @home, the rest on the road, who can they beat?

Calgary
Boston
Winnipeg
Tampa Bay
Florida
Ottawa

They need to win ALL of these games, just to get to what is considered to be the minimum required number of points to get into the playoffs...........92.

Sure I did, I just didn't list it because it was already heavily implied by you as being the factor we were discussing. Being that you've mentioned about a 100 times in this thread, and constructed that hypothetical to stress its importance.

There was no intellectual dishonesty there.

Well, anyone can beat anyone of course. If they continue to play like they have recently, I wouldn't predict them to beat any of those teams.

Games are played on the ice, so we'll see. A month ago I would have said they'd at least get points if not win every game except Boston. Now, that's obviously a more bold prediction.

You tend to side with some of the leaf fans here.

It's obvious that toronto would love to have had fewer games scheduled in October and November, and more scheduled in March and April..........so that they'd have more than six games remaining at this point in time.

BUT, with the nearly three week break for the Olympics, the Schedule maker had to come up with yet another compressed schedule, that may have factored into the current state of the leafs. Yes I'm sure someone will point of that all the teams were affected by the compressed schedule, but not equally.

I'm sure there are teams that had more/fewer back to back games, fewer/more games the day after returning from a long road trip, than other teams.

I like the leafs as a team, but I call things precisely as I see them. We just happen to disagree about Eugen Melnyk, NHLers in the Olympics, Chick-Fil-A and a couple of other choice issues.

As far as the more games in hand thing goes, I've got a hypothetical for you:

Would you rather have
Three games left in the season, on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, or
Four games left in the season, on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday?

Which scenario is more conducive to getting points? Is it a safer bet to say the team with the more spaced out schedule gets 100% of their points than it is that the team with the crunched schedule gets 75%?

Could having fewer games remaining be a virtue in this hypothetical instance?

It's possible- but It's hard to see the tide turning- on Thursday Carlyle was going over hockey basics with the team.

That's a pretty scary sign

There is a very logical reason, that at this time of the year, during all the sports highlights shows on all the sports networks, they display the current standings (for the wild-card race) and list both the points and the games remaining.

The more games a team has remaining, the more chances they have to pick up points on the teams that have fewer games.

So I would take more chances to get more points and gain ground, or maintain a lead, on a team that has fewer chances.

BTW, I'm pretty sure the NHL does not allow 4 games scheduled in five days.

Do they also post the PTS% as well??

How can you continually miss the point?? You're rhyming off stuff that no one is disagreeing with, all the while sweeping the part EVERYONE is talking about under the rug. Stop trying to change the subject and address the issue that was being talked about.
