Frederik Andersen out indefinitely, Hurricanes sign Jaroslav Halak to PTO |

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Frederik Andersen will be out indefinitely, as he deals with a blood clotting issue.
Andersen is 34 years old and is currently in his third season with the Hurricanes. General manager Don Waddell did note in a press release that the team is confident in a full recovery for the netminder.
Obviously, best wishes to Andersen on a quick recovery. He’s played well for Carolina this season and other than one start against the Los Angeles Kings where he allowed five goals, he’s posted good numbers.
With Andersen out, the team signed veteran goaltender Jaroslav Halak to a professional tryout. Halak is 38 years old and posted a .903 save percentage across 25 games with the New York Rangers last season.
Without Andersen, the expectation would've been that the net would go to Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov (who has been recalled). However, both goalies have struggled a little in their limited action this season, with Raanta posting an .870 save percentage across five games, and Kochetkov at just an .836 save percentage over three games.
So while a Raanta/Kochetkov tandem may be expected, possibly bringing in Halak for depth isn’t a bad call. The Hurricanes suffered from a lack of stability in net through a good chunk of October, and hopefully someone is able to fill-in during Andersen’s absence, which is quite a blow for the team.
