The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they’ve signed forward Sebastian Aho to an eight-year contract extension, which carries a $9.75 million cap hit.

Aho is 26 years old and this past season, the forward scored 36 goals and 67 points in 76 games. The extension will kick in at the conclusion of his current deal, for the 2024-25 season.

Since being selected by the team in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft, Aho has emerged as a legitimate top center for the Hurricanes. Over the last five years, Aho has frequnelty surpassed 30 goals and put up nearly point-per-game numbers.

While he’s unlikely to ever increase those totals to earth-shattering stats, Aho’s game is extremely well-rounded. His speed and puck control, along with his finishing ability, work ethic, and always-improving defensive game make him the exact type of player you’d want at the top of your lineup.

I’ll have a more in-depth article on the contract out for HockeyComparables.com in the coming days, but as a short note, it’s great for the team to be able to retain Aho long-term. Carolina has been an organization that’s shown hesitancy to give up high-priced, long-term contracts at times, so locking up the forward for the best years of his career is a huge win. Especially with a rising cap and the fact that Aho is still just in his mid-20s as well, the center will help the Hurricanes continue to contend for the foreseeable future.
