Wrap: Flyers Beat Toronto, 4-3
It was not without its share of white-knuckle moments but the Philadelphia Flyers took a three-goal lead into the third period on their way to holding on for a key 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night.
With the Washington Capitals idle on Tuesday night and the New York Islanders suffering a 4-1 home loss at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Flyers at least temporarily strengthened their hold on third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers hold a three-point lead over the Capitals. Washington, who hosts Toronto on Wednesday, holds two games in hand over the Flyers. The Islanders, now trail the Flyers by five points.
Offensively, Owen Tippett (one goal, one assist), Morgan Frost (one goal, one assist), Travis Sanheim (one goal) and Scott Laughton (game-winning goal) led the way for the Flyers. Cam York, Garnet Hathaway, Ryan Poehling and Ronnie Attard chipped in one assist apiece. Sam Ersson stopped 27 of 30 shots to earn the win. The team blocked a whopping 36 shot attempts (a season high) and got help from the post four times (Philly drew iron twice themselves).
On the Toronto side, John Tavares record three points (1g, 2a) in the third period. Tyler Bertuzzi (one goal, one assist) and William Nylander (power play goal) also scored for Toronto in their comeback bid. Auston Matthews had two assists and Morgan Rielly had one helper. Ilya Samsonov made 24 saves on 28 shots.
The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power play. Toronto was 1-for-3.
Flyers captain Sean Couturier, for the first time in his NHL career, was a healthy scratch. Veteran forward Cam Atkinson and veteran defenseman Marc Staal were also scratched. Olle Lycksell and Adam Ginning entered the lineup for Philadelphia.
