Going into Tuesday night's game against the San Jose Sharks, the Flyers had one objective and one objective only: Get two points, preferably in regulation. It was pretty sloppy at times. A parade to the penalty box worked against Philly, although the Flyers generated a lot of pressure on their own power plays in going 1-for-4.

When all was said and done, though, the Flyers accomplished their goal: They skated off with a 3-2 win in regulation despite San Jose's Filip Zadina striking for two power plays to erase deficits of 1-0 (first period) and 2-1 (second period).

In the third period, Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson (27 saves on 29 shots) made the save of the game: a point-blank save on Alexander Barbanov (11th and 12th of the season) on a 2-on-1 rush for San Jose. Play swung the other way. On a delayed penalty on San Jose, Owen Tippett (23rd goal of the season) put the Flyers ahead to stay as he converted a nice feed from Travis Konecny into a 3-2 lead at 5:09.

Earlier, Joel Farabee (19th goal) of the season, took an aerial saucer stretch pass from Morgan Froster and went in to score on a breakaway against Magnus Chrona (39 saves on 42 shot) at 3:29 of the opening period. Later, at 9:20 of the second period, Frost scored (10th of the season) a power play goal from the right side of the net after a friendly carom of a Konecny attempt. Cam York drew the first of two secondary assists he'd collect on the night.

The Flyers largely controlled the play at 5-on-5, but all the special teams play detracted from some of the flow of the game. The Sharks made a bit of a push in the latter half of the third period but the Flyers closed the door.

With the New York Islanders idle on Tuesday night, the Flyers took a four-point lead (plus a 26-21 edge in regulation wins if a tiebreaker becomes necessary at the end of the season) in the battle for third place in the Metro Division. The Islanders hold two games in hand.

The Flyers (34-24-8) will hold their team photo day at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday but will not practice. On Thursday, they will hold a morning skate in Voorhees before hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs (37-19-8).

The Islanders (29-21-14) are also idle on Wednesday. On Thursday, they will visit the Buffalo Sabres (31-30-5).
