Summary:

Short and sweet, Detroit was outplayed for an entire game but managed to hold a lead for more than 2 periods because of Lyon’s efforts. It all fell apart after Ekblad’s penalty ended, he rushed the net and Barkov scored. Detroit found an overtime point and shootout entrance off a late goal from Larkin, but it wasn’t enough.

Detroit has by this point has likely parted ways with the post season. Yzerman didn’t make any moves (though said they were trying for one) and wasn’t going to let go of future assets for a first round exit from the playoffs. While the logic gels, it doesn’t make the ending any less disappointing.

There isn’t a spin on this. For Detroit to win this game they would have had to simply have beaten a goalie while being badly outplayed and kept in by Forida’s former backup netminder. Anyone who watched this could see fairly clearly which of these teams had a real shot to do something in the post season. This year (again), it’s not Detroit. There’s no joy in that statement. You want the best for the team, but it’s starting to look more and more like a Varsity vs. JV scrimmage whenever Detroit hits the ice against another NHL team. The team just seems to have quit at times. There were plenty of unforced errors that could have been goals for the Panthers. Lyon did all he could for those first 2 periods.

The “depth” that was added in the post season still just looks like place holders for prospects or the right free agent. in the moment, there are many suggestions that I’d like to make but will hold back because next day regret can easily set in. The better team won, period. The game was artificially close due to goaltending. It was at least a scrappy and ugly affair where the team showed some fight at times, but it’s too late in the season for that. Your captain comes back trying to fight through pain and your big offseason addition can’t seem to settle a puck for far too many games now.

There’s nothing left in the tank to raise the flag for. The amount of regret for venting “in the moment” isn’t worth the fallout. The team just isn’t there yet and unfortunately for the newer faces, the fans are far more tired of it than the new team can carry the water for.

Detroit First Period goals:

At 11:31 Fabbri got Detroit on the board. A cross ice pass from Perron found Fabbri in the right faceoff dot and the veteran cashed in on the power play. 1-0 DET

Shots: 10-8 DET
Score: 1-0 DET

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:

No second period goals

Shots: 24-17 FLA
Score: 1-0 DET

Third Period Detroit goals

After giving up the lead and two goals in 3 minutes, Detroit tied the game on the power play. Larkin got his 29th of the season in a game Detroit wasn’t sure the captain would return to after an early puck to the back of the knee. The fact that the game is tied at this point is at least something. Detroit has been badly outplayed.

With a 4 on 3, Gostisbehere got the puck to Kane, who found Larkin lingering at the corner of the net on his off wing. Larkin ripped the shot to tie the game at 2-2.

Shots: 37-22 FLA
Score: 2-2

Overtime:

No Overtime goals

Shots: 39-23 FLA
Score: 2-2
