— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) April 8, 2024
Detroit’s goaltending situation has been a complicated scenario. As Lyon sat on the shelf as the 3rd goalie, Husso was tapped as the starter. When Husso went down, Lyon showed up. There seems to be at least a general agreement that Lyon is one of the top (if not THE top) reasons for Detroit’s positioning at this point. That begs an interesting question.
With the race to the playoffs as tight as it is, the time to get Husso some reps may not avail itself in any ideal form. If Detroit is several goals ahead in the third period, maybe. However, it feels like a departure from Lyon for the last stint would be a mistake. Potentially, a costly mistake.
Lyon was able to seal a win against Buffalo after a strong first period outing by Detroit. Though there were good plays down the stretch, it would be a discredit to say that it wasn’t Lyon’s performance as a top reason for the Wings to grab a win that put them back into a wildcard spot.
This isn’t a knock on Husso, but an endorsement on Lyon. Without knowing the coach’s thoughts on the return of the initial starting goalie, where do you all stand on this issue? Let Lyon ride this out, or do you need to find a way to get Husso in net to face the increased pressure these last few games will bring?
