Summary:

This was a nice surprise for Detroit fans. From Tampa Bays point of view, Cooper’s facial expression after an icing by the Wings with 13.3 seconds left in the period said it all. Cooper isn’t happy with how this went down. The lightning outshot Detroit, and had some very dominant shifts. This was one where Lyon made saves, there were a few near misses, and Detroit found scoring from multiple places. Kane, Fabri, Perron and an empty net by Raymond.

This is an odd turn of events and a welcome one. It’s more likely than not that Tampa fans feel their team was robbed. That may well be the case and Detroit will take it. Seider’s assist on the GWG was a rip. The young defenseman continues to block shots and take some “stingers”.

Kane’s backhand was a surprise goal. It almost looked like a last minute “plan B” but as a player that’s how deceptive he can be on those shots. It was also good to see that Detroit’s top line wasn’t all the offense to be had. Fabbri doesn’t get a lot of press but there are times he can step up and make things happen.

Edvinsson’s poke check leading to Fabbri’s goal was a good look for the young Dman. He seems to have found some favor with the coaching staff and the front office. Tampa is an immensely confident (for good reason) team when the cycle is going. Apparently this is the first time in history Detroit has won a season series against the Lightning that contained 3 or more games.

Let me know your thoughts, and if this is a step in the right direction.

Detroit First Period goals:

No goals in the first period

Shots: 17-12 TBL
Score: 0-0

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:

Early in the 2nd Kane put the first goal on the board. The future hall of famer made a ridiculous backhand tally after collecting the rebound off of a Larkin shot. The play started with Debrincat entering the zone and finding Larkin. 1-0 DET

Shots: 26-21 TBL
Score: 1-1

Third Period Detroit goals

At 3:40 in the 3rd, Compher battled his way into the O zone and toward the net, dropping the puck off for Fabbri who elevated the puck and restored a 1 goal lead to Detroit. The play started with a nice poke check by Edvinsson at the blue line. 2-1 DET

With 2:40 left in regulation, Detroit won an offensive zone draw and the puck went to Seider. The Dman shot the puck on net and Perron netted a backhand shot off the rebound. 3-2 DET

With 1:03 left, Tampa had pulled the goalie. On a D zone faceoff Larkin got the puck to Raymond who skated up ice and scored an empty net tally. 4-2 DET

Shots: 36-32
Score: 4-2 DET
