Summary:

This season will be looked at in many ways. The disappointment becomes more palpable with each loss. From the fans, the press, and as hard as they try to push forward the team is showing the signs of the familiar early end.

What’s left to say at this point? At points the season was the most fun this fanbase has had in a while. Certainly in the new arena. The feeling of something special being done popped up and those moments do a lot for people who need them. Detroit and Michigan have been through some rough runs, and sports can be the fun distraction. Collegiate championships, the Lions play a magical season, the Tigers off to a fantastic start. Unfortunately, Detroit is hitting the final stretch with a blown tire. The gaps that management seeks to fill through development and free agent plug ins still bear deficiencies that will force the team to grow in a tough division and learn some hard lessons.

To the positive, Larkin’s 3rd straight 30 goal season is the first player to do so since the last captain. His presence was clearly missed and the team lost ground at a time when they needed to bank some points. Congrats to Dylan who truly does wear the wheel with immense pride and takes this as personally as any player. It has been a year for the captain I can’t honestly imagine in terms of highs and lows. I’ll avoid the details, most of you know them. To come back and give all you have is something very special to see.

There are no big “questions”. Just the reality that each day holds its own ups and downs. I hope each of you have had fantastic moments this season and will be able to look back on some of those as we see the final handful of games from this roster.

Detroit First Period goals:

After giving up an early tally, it looked like Larkin may have scored, but after two pipe hits, Veleno re entered the zone and Copp found the tying tally. At 7:11 JV threw the puck to the slot area and Copp tapped home a backhander. 1-1

Shots: 13-12 NYR
Score: 2-1 NYR

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:

1:24 into the second period Detroit tied the score back up. Perron shot a puck on net which deflected off a defender and off of Compher’s skate and into the net. 2-2

Larkin grabbed Detroit’s first lead of the game on his 30th goal (short lived as less than 30 seconds later Goodrow got his fourth of the year to tie it) during a power play at 13:19. The Wings captain won the faceoff, Perron got the puck to Gostisbehere who shot and his rebound found Larkin at the side of the net. 3-2 DET

Shots: 28-23 NYR
Score: 3-3

Third Period Detroit goals

No Detroit goals

Shots: 38-34
Score: 4-3 NYR
