With the trade deadline fast approaching, fans of every NHL team are refreshing X in the hope of seeing that their general manager has made a deal. Around lunchtime, the Canadiens announced a deal, but it wasn’t to send Jake Allen or David Savard elsewhere, it was just a prospect swap.

Kent Hughes sent 2020 2nd-round pick Jan Mysak to Anaheim in exchange for 2020 1st-round pick and Montreal native Jacob Perreault. After acquiring Nicolas Beaudin and Nathan Légaré, it looks like the Canadiens’ GM likes to gamble on Quebec-born prospects that have yet to pan out.

Mysak had gathered 13 goals and seven assists with the Rocket this season and a total of 20 goals and 11 assists in 110 AHL games. Mysak has improved his point production this season with the Rocket, but Hughes elected to use him to bring Perreault back on home soil.

The 27th pick overall in 2020, Perreault is the son of former Habs’ player and faceoff wizard Yannick Perreault, but don’t get too excited, the son is a winger and doesn’t have his father’s skill at the faceoff dot. The 21-year-old has played in 161 AHL games and has picked up 91 points in the process. It’s not a bad total really, but back in 2021-2022 he had a 37 points season before seeing his production diminish to 19 points last season and he’s got 18 in 31 games.

In essence, this is an AHL deal and if Perreault ends up living up to his pedigree, it will have been a good move for the Canadiens’ general manager. If he doesn’t, I don’t think anyone will lose any sleep over trading Mysak away. He projected as a third-line center really and the Canadiens now have Owen Beck who might just be penciled in that spot for Kent Hughes.
Will the Canadiens make another move before tomorrow’s trade deadline? Maybe, but fans should manage their expectations as it’s unlikely that very much will happen. Unless of course, a team feels like they are losing the day and panic buys David Savard for a 1st-round pick, weirder things have happened.
