While the Canadiens continue their rebuild, the Canucks are battling for first place in the standings and will be hoping to win Lord Stanley’s Cup in June. Vancouver is having an excellent season and had 94 points, good for the 4th place league-wide (three teams have 94 points, but Florida has got a game in hand while New York has got more regulation wins, giving them the tiebreaker).
The Canucks are also fourth in the league when it comes to goals scored with 241 on the season, while the Canadiens have only got 188. The two teams have met once so far this season back in November, when the Canucks beat the Canadiens 5-2. Jake Allen was in net for Montreal and Casey DeSmith manned Vancouver’s net. Tonight’s goaltenders have yet to be confirmed by both teams. De Smith had a .938 SP in the first meeting this season and since Trevor Demko when down to injury, he’s been the main man.
Samuel Montembeault has faced Vancouver four times in his career, and he’s got a 2-1-1 record with a 4.78 GAA and a .858 SP. As for Cayden Primeau, he’s never taken on the Canucks. Perhaps now would be a good time to use the back-up and let him gain some valuable experience against a very prolific team offensively speaking.
Juraj Slafkovsky’s point streak now stands at five games and he’ll try to keep that going. The Habs will want to keep a close eye on Vancouver’s top three scorers: J.T. Miller who’s got 89 points, Elias Pettersson who’s got 82 and defenseman Quinn Hughes who’s got 79. That’s three players in the top 13 for Vancouver and Hughes leads all defensemen in points so far this year with Cale Makar trailing him by four points.
