Samuel Montembeault will man the net tonight for the Canadiens and since it’s Montembeault’s bobblehead night, the first 8,000 fans to show up at the Bell Centre will receive the collectible. It appears like a small compensation for the courageous fans who invested their hard-earned money to watch the 27th and 28th teams in the standing battle it out.
The Canadiens have lost their last five games and have only got one win in the last eight games. The sole win came against the 30th-place team, the Anaheim Ducks, who didn’t even appear to be trying in the Habs’ 5-0 win. In those last eight games, the Canadiens have been outscored 32-18. It's even worst for the Coyotes though as they've lost their last 12 games.
Each team has won five of the last 10 games between the two sides, but the Coyotes won the only match between the two this season by a score of 3-2 in November. Cole Caufield has scored four goals against Arizona in just five games and a couple of goals from the sniper would be a welcome sight for fans and members of the Habs’ brass alike.
Brendan Gallagher caught up to Serge Savard in the Canadiens’ all-time point leaders (412 points) with a goal against the Devils on Saturday and is now one assist short of catching up to Mark Recchi who’s 42nd in the Cannadiens’ all-time assists leaders with 202. As for Kaiden Guhle and Jesse Ylonen, they’ll be skating in the 99th game of their NHL career. It’s hard to believe that Ylonen has already played 98th game with the Canadiens. The 35th pick overall at the 2018 entry draft has hardly made his mark. Granted he hasn’t had that much quality ice time, but ice time is earned and if he cannot earn it across a couple of seasons in which the Canadiens have had so many injuries, it’s hard to believe he could do it when everyone’s healthy.
The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 PM and the winner tonight will really be the team that loses the game. It’s a shame that the Canadiens are out of playoff contention so early for a 3rd consecutive season, but that’s what happens in a rebuild and some more patience will be required for the fans.
