The Columbus Blue Jackets were unable to hold the early lead, yet managed to get the extra point. The Blue Jackets fell to the Detroit Red Wings by the final score of 4-3 in the overtime.

Period I

The Michigan kid, Zach Werenski, opened the scoring of the game for his fifth of his shortened season unassisted.

Alexandre Texier got the go-ahead score for the road team. Him lighting the lamp earned him his 11th in his first season back in North America. The Frenchman’s goal was assisted by Werenski and Damon Severson. Severson’s secondary assist came in his milestone 700th career game.

Period II

Lucas Raymond got the home team on the board with an early powerplay goal. The Swede’s 23rd of the season got the apples to Robby Fabbri and Patrick Kane.

Mo Seider evened the game at deuce all less than 90 seconds later from Ben Chariot and Michael Rasmussen.

Period III

Kirill the Thrill Marchenko got the visitors back ahead with his 18th tally of the season. His powerplay goal got Werenski and Johnny Gaudreau their cookies.

Raymond’s second of the night earned him his 24th this career year from Kane and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Overtime

Kane’s game winner came 48 seconds into the extra time for his 15th of his shortened season from Alex DeBrincat and Seider.

Players to Watch

Mortiz Seider — goal and assist for a +2 in 23:49. The Wings need him to be the top defender they think he is for them to hold the final playoff spot in the East.

Ivan Provorov — 3 shots on goal and 1 blocked shot against with a -1 rating in 21:46. Still a good effort after passing 600 career games in the show. Crazy how Detroit and Tampa looked at him before the deadline. Wonder if they loop back this summer. Great mentor to the young Russian core in Ohio.

Goaltenders

James Reimer — 32 saves on 35 shots for a 0.914 save percentage.

Daniil Tarasov — 22 saves on 26 shots for a 0.846 save percentage. Worst game maybe this month, but every young goalie has one. Still got the points for the team.

CBJ THREE STARS OF THE GAME

1. Zach Werenski — goal (5), assist (37)

2. Alexandre Texier — goal (11)

3. Kirill Marchenko — PPG (18)

What’s Next?

Western swing of back to back games with Colorado on Friday and Vegas on Saturday. Otherwise, March Madness begins at the Shoe.

Rick Nash

Congratulations to Rick Nash for being named the new general manager of Hockey Canada for the 2024 World Hockey Championships. The 2 time gold medalist was hand picked by Doug Armstrong, the current general manager of the St. Louis Blues, for the role.

Nash has been with the Columbus brass since 2021, being recruited by John Davidson and Jarmo Kekalainen to make his return to the Buckeye State after 9 years away from the franchise.

Could this also be a play for the general manager spot left open in Columbus? Maybe? Doubtful.
