Today on MythBusters: Steven Stamkos, and the Canadiens. Plausible?

If there is one show my family misses more than any other on television, it is MythBusters. My kids grew up on and even fell asleep to it most nights….. while scientifically looking at all the possible scenarios behind common myths.

Every silly season that comes along, usually brings with it a really juicy rumor. But rarely does a rumor reach to the levels of mythology like this one appears headed for.

Today’s Myth:

Steven Stamkos is being courted by the Montréal Canadiens with a giant payday. He is considering going there because of Martin St. Louis.

Confirmed? Busted? Plausible?

I mean, this one has it all.

Logically…..Stamkos, a legendary kid from Toronto, who won the Stanley Cup playing with now Montréal Canadiens coach Marty St. Louis, is heading to a team that has tons of space and the Lightning realize that they can no longer match the price.

Meanwhile, Stephen Stamkos has told folks since he was a kid watching them in Ontario, he would love to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But Toronto is always up against the cap and it doesn’t appear ever to have the ability to fix that anytime soon. Add to this the legendary truth that Toronto Maple Leafs fans absolutely hate the Montréal Canadiens and are feeling sick to their stomach picturing their prodigal son sliding on that uniform soon….and you have an almost perfect rumor.

Reality?

I’ve always said that every rumor which is leaked is leaked with a motive behind the leaking. In this case three giant media centers for Hockey: The Maple Leafs media, The Canadiens media, and The Canadiens French media, are known for their ability to microscopically pick a part every thing that is said by everyone….all the time.

Does it even make sense?

On some levels…..yes, sure. Marty would love to have Stammer mentoring a young Caufield and gang. And Montreal has the cap space to put an offer together which no other team could touch.

Also, Tampa hasn’t treated Steve Stamkos very well in what has been an “almost non-negotiation” of a new contract. Stephen didn’t make a big deal of this during the season because that’s the kind of leader he is, but he did go out and have himself a serious season… because, again that is the kind of leader he is.

In recent years, Stephen Stamkos has made it very clear he wants to remain and retire with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had every opportunity a few years ago to sign in Toronto, but it didn’t work out, showing that he is simply not going to sign there on a Hometown discount to say he played there.

So is this myth fully busted?

I guess I would call this rumor “plausible, leaning towards busted.”

But the only certain TMI business is how things can change with a with a phone call. And depending on what happens with Mitch Marner, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be a factor in this one.

So you can be sure I’ll be tracking this one….

I will return with a rumor update.
