On Seth Jones and Why a Trade Feels Possible… Who is Interested?

There’s been some budding speculation that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones could become available based on the timeline of the organization.

Jones still has 5 years remaining on his contract, which has a cap hit of $9.5 million a year. Seth is also 30 years old. By the time the Chicago Blackhawks are ready to take a big leap and become serious contenders, does Seth Jones still make sense on their blue line?

First off, we aren’t talking about a guy who doesn’t keep himself in great shape . Jones is quite the physical specimen and has skills to back it up. And lately, he’s been very productive with six points in his last four games. Since his 51 points his first year in Chicago, his totals have dropped each year to 31 last year. This season, he has 20 points in 37 games, but has missed 17 games due to injuries. His points per game are up a little bit this year, and let’s face it, this guy has skills regardless of his numbers…

Is he a $9.5 million player? Probably not. Not right now at least. However, if the Hawks were to hold onto 2.5 million of that, he becomes very intriguing to certain teams, especially if the Hawks can take back some money in the trade for the short term. There are not many Seth Jones-type defensemen in the league. His size, skill, and speed are in the realm coaches usually only can dream of.

One team that has always loved him would be the Dallas Stars . Seth was actually born in Arlington, Texas, when his father, Popeye Jones, was a member of the Dallas Mavericks. When Popeye moved to Colorado to play for the Nuggets, Seth Jones began playing hockey at the age of five. His dad realized his love of hockey very early and went to Joe Sakic at the time for advice. Colorado has also been in the rumors with Seth Jones in the past for this very reason….

The reality here is Seth Jones is signed for quite a while, and therefore, we don’t have to look only look at teams who are looking for rentals. We can look at everybody. I know the Vancouver Canucks have interest, and if they can get a trade done to move JT Miller, Seth Jones becomes a real possibility, depending on what they have to take back from New York. Carolina, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh are rumored to be poking around.

There are plenty of logical reasons why a team wouldn’t trade for Seth Jones and his contract, yet I just get this weird feeling talking to people that it’s more than possible. Again, remember, logic only works if you have all of the factors in front of you. That’s never the case with an NHL rumor because teams have so many different things going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about.

What’s the Buzz?
Do you want Seth Jones on your team?
What would you be willing to give up?
At what salary would you want him on your team?

More to come…
