The parting of ways with Todd Reirden was close to a certainty once the season ended. The power play wasn’t working and while Erik Karlsson had a good season by other’s standards it was not close to the year prior when he won the Norris Trophy. Enter the coach he worked with during that Norris Trophy

Quinn has experience in multiple levels of hockey including three years as the New York Rangers coach along with the past two seasons in San Jose during a planned tank.

Quinn was also Mike Sullivan’s teammate for a season at Boston University way back in 1986-87. They are no strangers to one another and when you combine Quinn’s relationship with Sullivan and his relationship with Karlsson it appears on the surface to be a good fit from the human side of things.

One thing I’m not going to jump to conclusions on is that the power play will now be a strength for the team. I think it will be hard to be worse or even the same. Last year was a complete disgrace. The 2022-23 Sharks with a Norris winning Erik Karlsson were only 18.4% as the 25th ranked power play. It remains to be seen what Quinn’s role will be on the staff. We’ll have to wait and see.

Overall this seems like an assistant coaching hire that checks off a few logical boxes. The relationship with the head coach and one of the team’s new star players is certainly a positive. Quinn comes with five years of head coach experience which I also view as a positive for someone being hired in an assistant role. The team needed a change from Reirden and now they have one.
