Prior to their loss against the Vegas Golden Knights last night, the Carolina Hurricanes made a second notable pre-deadline move, acquiring defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from the Arizona Coyotes. In exchange for the defenseman, the Hurricanes gave up a third-round pick in 2026.

Gostisbehere is 29 years old and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. In 52 games with Arizona, the defenseman has posted huge numbers, with 10 goals and 31 points, and has averaged over 22 minutes per game in ice time this season.

While he’s likely to play a pretty sheltered role, Gostisbehere is a solid addition for the Hurricanes. We knew it was a possibility the Hurricanes could look to add a left-handed defenseman, and we’ll likely see him add a bit of offense to the team’s bottom pairing.

For only a third-round pick, it’s hard to look at the move as anything short of a win for the Hurricanes. Gostisbehere’s 82-game pace this season is nearly 50 points and while he’s likely not going to be in a role to keep up that level of offense, he’s a great addition. Carolina really didn’t give up much for what they’re getting and he could be a great fit on a pairing with a defense-first partner in Jalen Chatfield.
