It’s tempting to get out in front of things and say this is a new team. While there has definitely been a boost in morale and smarter play making, there are still a lot of games to be played. It’s safe to say, though, that there’s a new energy in the room and on the ice.
Two moments that stand out are Seider’s kick save and Raymond deferring an empty net goal to Larkin. Both show commitment to the team in different ways. Seider has been a blocking machine, no doubt. He’s picked it up. Edvinsson seems to be getting more physical and making simpler plays. Even Chiarot and Gustafsson were making straight forward solid defensive plays.
The new look PK is certainly worth a look. From the trapezoid to a diamond formation. There seems to be a much quicker route to gapping up and shutting down lanes. That is a fairly significant change in just a few days. The defensive play more and more makes clean safe chips out of the zone to reset. Simplified play that seems to be building confidence.
It will be interesting to see if the team looks at some deals as several teams seem to be open to moving players. Regardless, right now the coach is getting more out of the current group than they were previously showing but in a very short sample size. It’s a fun night, the fans have had a great time the past two games, Trey Augustine stopped 38 of 39 shots and handed the USA a 4-1 victory over Canada. It’s nice to have multiple good things happening over the past several days.
To all of you, have a safe and happy new year! Thank you again for taking time to read these blogs. Without you, I don’t get to do this. The new youtube channel has been a huge blessing as well. It’s a privilege to cover the hometown team and get some input back and forth. Let me know your thoughts, and we’ll see what the next days bring.
1st Period goals:
At 17:52 Berggren, fresh off the bench, gets a pass in the neutral zone from Tarasenko and ends up 1 on 0 cashing in on the opportunity. 1-0 DET
At 3:18 Pittsburgh tied it up on the power play. 2-2
At 14:26 Detroit regained the lead on the power play as Compher taps in a puck that had rebounded in the crease after a shot from the blue line by Gustafsson. 3-2 DET
With an empty net and 13.2 seconds left, Raymond gave up his own chance to get Larkin back onto the score sheet. That was a big display of players wanting to lift each other up. The group has a different feel.
