The San Jose Sharks announced today that they’ve named Ryan Warsofsky as the team’s new head coach.

The Sharks’ head coaching role had been vacant since David Quinn was fired on April 24.

Warsofsky spent the past two seasons as the Sharks’ assistant coach. Prior to that, he was most recently the head coach of the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, where he led the team to a Calder Cup in 2022. At just 36 years old, he becomes the youngest head coach in the NHL.

While Warsofsky has a track record of AHL success and a good resume, the path to the Sharks announcing him as head coach still represents somewhat of a head-scratcher. After firing Quinn, the team took about six weeks of interviewing and evaluating candidates, just to ultimately promote internally. That’s not to discredit Warsofsky’s abilities, it just raises questions as to why the process took as long as it did if the organization had confidence in Warsofsky as their guy.

Regardless, Warsofsky will get a great opportunity to help usher in the Sharks’ new era, with a key focus on player development in the coming years. As the likes of Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Quentin Musty and others make the jump to the NHL, Warsofsky will have the chance to start building the team back into a legitimate contender.
