The Winnipeg Jets made it 3 wins in a row Sunday evening when they defeated the Calgary Flames by the score of 5-2 at the Canada Life Centre. Eric Comrie finally got back in the win column after an 8-game losing streak.
First Period:
Kyle Connor opened the scoring for the Jets just after the 5-minute mark of the game with a highlight reel goal when he split the Flames defence, went in alone and scored back-hand top shelf on Dan Vladar. It was the nicest goal I’ve seen this year by a Jets player thus far. It was also the lone goal of the 1st period.
Second Period:
At the half-way mark of the 2nd period, Mason Appleton banged home a rebound to put the Jets up 2-0. Mackenzie Weegar scored on the PP for the Flames to bring to score to 2-1 at the 15-minute mark of the period. Gabe Vilardi would restore the two-goal lead for the Jets with under a minute left in the period when he took a nice drop pass from Dylan Samberg and fired a shot past the Flames netminder to put the Jets up 3-1 heading into the final period.
Third Period:
With the Jets on their first PP of the game, Vilardi would score his 2nd goal of the game from his signature spot just 3 minutes into the final frame. Nazem Kadri would score a minute later from in close to make the score 4-2. Mark Scheifele would then score on a one-timer on the Jets 2nd PP of the game to make the score 5-2 which would be the final score.
Some takeaways from the game:
The Jets special teams continue to be key to their success as they went 2-2 on the PP and 2-3 on the PK.
Scheifele leads the team with 28 goals with Connor sitting right behind him with 27. Both players continue to be amongst the league leaders in goals.
It was very nice to see Comrie finally get rewarded with a win in this game. Although he technically lost 8 games in a row, by no means has he played poorly. In many of those losses, he played well enough for the Jets to win.
The Jets will now go on the road for 3 games with the first stop being Tuesday night in Montreal to take on Patrik Laine and the Habs.
