Eklund on Flyers: The Flyers Should Shut Ersson Down For the Season |

Another really unfortunate injury last night for Sam Ersson, who was just getting his game back and starting to relax in net again. This is his third injury of the year, and possibly a re-lapse of the same injury… Either way, you have to feel really bad for the guy. Such a great person who brings a lot of positive energy into the locker room. And a goalie the team plays more relaxed around.
Whatever his injury is , there are some injuries that just don’t mix well with goalies. The movement and the flexibility needed are a strain on certain parts of the body… if the Flyers do truly believe that Sam is a potential solid number one NHL goalie, they really need to do the right thing and shut him down for the rest of the season allowing him to heal properly.
The Flyers have two other goalies up: Kolosov and Fedotov. I do believe Fedotov can be a backup goalie in the NHL, but I believe Kolosov is a starter. Again, I’m going to compare him to Bobrovsky. When the Flyers had Bob, he was platooning and like Kolosov looked wildly inconsistent. Moments of greatness mixed with moments of confusion in net. It wasn’t until Bob went somewhere else that he played a huge chunk of the games and became the Vezina/Cup winner dominant force we see today.
This is a chance to see Kolosov, and what he can actually do. Currently playing only once in a while, he tends to overplay things and definitely needs to work on his handling of the puck and communication with his defense… It is true that during Ersson’s last injury, Kolosov looked better the more he played, and the Flyers actually had a really good run with the Kolosov/Fedotov combo.
So the benefit of letting Ersson heal this season, putting him on LTIR, would truly help the team’s experiment to perhaps figure out what they really have with Kolosov.
