Quick Hits: June 12, 2024

1) Hockey Canada scandal: Attorneys representing Flyers restricted free agent goaltender Carter Hart, who is unlikely to play anywhere during the 2024-25 season, were involved in a pre-trial remote hearing on Tuesday. No trial date has been set thus far for Hart and four other players on Team Canada's 2018 World Junior Championships roster. The five players have been criminally charged in conjunction with an alleged sexual assault. A trial is not expected to start before the spring of 2025. All five defendants' hockey careers are in limbo.

2) Flyers Daily: Jason Myrtetus interviews Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim in today's edition of Flyers Daily. Acknowledging that his 2022-23 season was disappointing, Sanheim discusses the motivation he had going into last offseason season amid rampant trade rumors and a new contract. He also talks about taking on more a leadership role, playing the right side on his defense pair (for the first time since the 2018-19 season), life on the family farm in Manitoba and more. The episode also features a segment in which Jason responds to a listener email regarding good contracts and bad contracts.

3) The Flyers social media team posted a video on Tuesday with 2023-24 highlight clips from their popular Mic'd Up feature. Watch below:

4) Offseason Spotlight: The Offseason Spotlight series on PhiladephiaFlyers.com will continue this week with a feature article on Cam York. I will post the link when the piece goes live.

5) Today in Flyers History: June 12

1968: The NHL holds its Inter-League Draft. The Flyers lose three players: Bill Sutherland (to the Minnesota North Stars). Jean Gauthier (Boston Bruins) and Ed Hoekstra (Denver Spurs of the Western Hockey League). They also lose Quebec Aces goaltender Fern Rivard to the Minnesota North Stars/Memphis South Stars (Central Hockey League).

The Flyers claim two players in the same draft: defenseman Larry Hale (North Stars), Ron Buchanan (Boston Bruins). Hale spends three-plus seasons as a regular starter for the Flyers. Buchanan does not make the NHL club in camp and is assigned to the Aces.

1969: The Flyers lose forward Jean-Guy Gendron to the Canadiens, but immediately purchase his contract back in a cash transaction.

1974 The NHL holds its Expansion Draft to stock the rosters of the newly added Washington Capitals and Kansas City Scouts (later Colorado Rockies and then New Jersey Devils). The Flyers lose forward Bruce Cowick and goaltender Michel Belhumeur to the Capitals and veteran forward Simon Nolet to Kansas City. Nolet is subsequently named the Scouts' inaugural captain.

1986: The Flyers sign free agent defenseman Ed "Boxcar" Hospodar as a free agent, bringing him back to Philly for a second stint with the team.

2000: The Flyers acquire rugged center Mark Janssens from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2000 ninth-round pick (Arne Ramholt). Janssens never plays a game for the Flyers. He is subsequently waived by Philly and reclaimed by Chicago.

2002: The Flyers acquire center Michal Handzus and goaltender Robert Esche from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for goaltender Brian Boucher and the Nasville Predators' 2002 third-round Draft pick.

2013: The Flyers acquire the rights to impending unrestricted agent defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders in exchange for AHL forward Shane Harper and a 2014 fourth-round pick (defenseman Devon Toews). On June 28, 2013, the Flyers sign Streit to a four-year, $21 million contract. Offensive-minded defenseman Streit's best two seasons in Philadelphia are the 2013-14 (10 goals, 44 points) and 2014-15 (nine goals, 52 points). His 2015-16 season is severely affected by injury (detached pubic plate), and he is never as effective again. An iconic player in his native Switzerland (120 national team games), Streit is later inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2020.

6) Happy birthday wishes go out to Philadelphia Phantoms 1998 Calder Cup champions alum Bruce Coles. A fan favorite at the Spectrum, Coles notched 30 goals for the Phantoms in 1996-97 and then was a valuable role player on the Phantoms' championship team the next season.
