Next on my list is the final expiring defender on the Columbus Blue Jackets’ roster - Marcus Bjork.

Bjork is from Umea, Sweden and stands at six foot, three inches tall. He is a right hand shooting two way defenseman that is more offensively minded. He plays on the right side of the ice.

He is the oldest of two, and the nephew of SHL coach/manager. Younger brother, Christoffer, 23, just completed his first season as the alternate captain for Kalix HC, having 31 points in 17 games. Joakim Engstrom was with IF Bjorkloven from 2015-2023 as coach and manger.

The Swede spent time split between two developmental teams - Bjorkloven and Lulea. He broke into the SHL with Orebro. The next season, he went to Malmo. His final years before signing with Columbus were with Brynas.

In his first full North American season, Bjork had 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in 41 games with the Cleveland Monsters; and 11 points in 33 games (3 goals, 8 assists).

When this move came last summer, this felt like the replacement response for Dean Kukan.

Like Kukan, Bjork is an undrafted European defender that was brought in by Kekalainen, and has stayed for a few years. With his restricted rights, he should be back. Easily could be 7th or 8th defender behind or even to Blankenburg, if the kids are not ready, but could be 10th on the depth chart.
