Two of the Anaheim Ducks future core pieces, center Trevor Zegras and defenseman Jamie Drysdale, are still unsigned and missed the opening of the club’s training camp on Friday.
Drysdale does not have much leverage as a 10.2 (c) restricted free agent (since he cannot sign an offer sheet) after missing most of last season with a shoulder injury, so it is possible that he ends up signing a one-year deal just to bolster his resume and get paid next summer, but Zegras is expecting big money after a pair of 60+ point seasons. According to Pierre LeBrun, the two sides have agreed on a three-year bridge deal, but are wide apart on the salary.
TVA’s Renaud Lavoie planted the seed that a team like Buffalo should deal for the 22-year-old. The Sabres are one of the few clubs currently with available cap space, but they are in the process of trying to lock up their own core players and have already signed centers Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens to long-term deals.
Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek may try to hold firm with Zegras, taking a page from his mentor Steve Yzerman, and with the Ducks likely headed for another bottom-five finish, he has no pressure to get him signed, but a prolonged impasse does nothing but make the relationship between the club and their star player acrimonious.
A deal will eventually get done since the Ducks do not want to trade him, but we could see a stare-down for a least a few weeks.
