The San Jose Sharks traded forward Anthony Duclair to the Tampa Bay Lightning today, along with a 2025 seventh-round pick, in exchange for a third-round pick in this year’s draft and defenseman Jack Thompson.

Duclair hasn’t had the best year with the Sharks, but was still arguably the team’s biggest trade chip. The winger scored 16 goals and 27 points in 56 games in his run with the team, and considering the team only gave up a fifth-round pick and depth forward in Steven Lorentz to acquire him, it's still ultimately a worthwhile move for San Jose.

As for the return, the third-round pick replaces the draft pick lost in the trade for Henry Thrun. In addition, Jack Thompson is still just 21 years old and has put up great numbers in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch. The defenseman was originally selected by the Lightning in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft and emerged as one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, scoring 32 points in 46 games with Syracuse this season.

Overall, it’s a good return for the Sharks, bringing back a mid-round pick and a pretty decent prospect in the deal. San Jose isn’t going to get any major future assets at this deadline, but the Duclair trade is still a small win for the Sharks, and they managed to get as much as anyone could've expected from the trade.
