It has been years since I've written this story...
Toughness/Intimidation is cyclical in this league. Some say it runs opposite to skill level, I have never subscribed to that theory. The thinking is the more skilled the team becomes the more they start forgetting about having toughness in their lineup. And that means smaller skilled players, who can be intimidated. This leaves them vulnerable.
Last season we saw two Stanley Cup finalists, who both combat skill and physical to perfection. Teams that fell to Florida or Las Vegas in the playoffs last year were saying they needed to get tougher as this season began.
We have seen teams get tougher physically....and eventually this leads to ....the goon. I respect goons for the role they play, and always will. Beyond their ability to punish their opponent, they become a huge distraction to their opponent. I grew up a Broad Street Bully...
But that was a loooooooong time ago.
Enter the Rangers and Matt Rempe. He is the latest overnight sensation on Broadway. Despite playing in 10 games to date, and averaging just over five minutes per game, MSG fans are already chanting this kid's name. He has done his job in creating a distraction night after night, with teams actually trading for players at the deadline to game plan for this five-minute-per-night wonder kid. Last night's NJ/NYR game was full of hoopla about this potential heavyweight battle... Matt Rempe didn't let us down. In fact, Matt Rempe will have an NHL hearing today for elbowing New Jersey’s Jonas Siegenthaler.
