UPDATE

We knew that Seattle needed to upgrade down the middle and they have a good player in Chandler Stephenson but oh wow that price tag...

Seattle signs Stephenson for a 7 year deal at 6.3 million per season. Stephenson has been a regular 50-60 point player over the past few seasons but he is already 30 years old. I like the player but this is a very rich contract and if the team was going to spend $$$ I would have looked elsewhere to do it.

We will see what else the day holds

Free Agency begins and the Seattle Kraken are right in the mix early here as it appears that Brandon Montour is heading to Seattle.

The reported deal is 7x7.14 million. The 30 year old right shot defenseman exploded offensively over the past few seasons with the Panthers, most notably a 73 point campaign in 80 games in 22/23 before injuries shortened his 23/24 campaign where he still put up 33 points in 66 games.

I am lukewarm on this deal right now, the Kraken clearly want and need a puck moving top 4 defenseman and someone who can transport the puck effectively on the powerplay. Montour will assist in all of those categories but like so many FA's, this is a deal that will get worse with age.

It's a big swing early for Ron Francis, we will have to see what else the day brings.

I'll update more as the day goes on.
