Now that the draft and the start of free agency has given way to some uneventful days the time for negotiations with Sidney Crosby have arrived. The reports out of Pittsburgh have been consistent from the start. Sidney Crosby will be signing his next contract to stay with the Pittsburgh Penguins. All signs continue to point in this direction.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and captain Sidney Crosby are closing in on a new contract, multiple team and league sources briefed on negotiations told The Athletic. The team and player are confident a deal will be agreed upon and formalized soon, the sources said.

It is understandable for people on the outside looking in questioning why Crosby would want to go down with a sinking ship. It is also understandable for those who have followed him and his career the entire time to understand loyalty is one of Crosby’s main attributes.

During those discussions, the sources said, Crosby reaffirmed to Dubas what he has repeatedly stated publicly — that he wants to finish his career with the Penguins, who selected him No. 1 in 2005. The potential deal is being viewed by both sides as “a commitment to Pittsburgh,” a team and league source said.

So things appear to be on the proper path for Crosby to remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s no fool. He knows where this team is and likely where it is going. This is what he wants. It is his legacy and his choice. He will be the one to make it.
