Kings re-sign Arthur Kaliyev

The Los Angeles Kings announced yesterday that they’ve re-signed forward Arthur Kaliyev to a one-year contract, worth $825,000. The winger’s extension came just before the announcement of the team’s training camp roster.

Kaliyev was originally selected by the team with the 33rd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and is entering his fourth NHL season. While Kaliyev showed quite a bit of offensive upside in his first two years with the Kings – scoring at an 82-game pace of 19 goals and 41 points as a 21-year-old in 2022-23 – last year, the winger seemingly fell out of favour with the Kings. In the 2023-24 season, Kaliyev got into just 51 games and managed only seven goals and 15 points, marking his lowest totals in each category since making the jump to the NHL.

It seemed like there was a good chance that a trade could be on the horizon this summer, but with the season now only weeks away and nothing materializing, it looks like Kaliyev starting the year in Los Angeles was the best short-term solution. While Kaliyev does have a fairly high offensive ceiling, his value is low, and hoping he can take a step next season is a better solution than taking pennies on the dollar in any trade.

With some members of the forward group exiting, there’s always a chance Kaliyev could get more of an opportunity in the coming year, and it would be interesting to see what he could do playing up the lineup in a more offensive role. At the same time, this looks to be somewhat of a make-or-break year for the young winger, at least in Los Angeles.
