A poor second period proved to be undoing of the Dallas Stars as they suffered their first loss of the 2024-25 regular season in a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Thursday.

The Stars were in good shape after the first period, taking a 1-0 lead to the locker room on a shorthanded breakaway goal by Colin Blackwell (1st) at 12:19. A nice backhanded finish beat Charlie Lindgren to complete the play. The lone assist belonged to Oskar Back for a nice lead pass to catch Blackwell in stride. First period shots were 7-6 Stars.

Things largely fell apart for Dallas in the second period. Washington struck three times for goals by Tom Wilson (3rd), Dylan Strome (2nd) and Taylor Raddysh (1st) while winning most of the battles and outshooting the Stars by a 12-7 margin.

After the Capitals briefly took a 2-1 lead, Dallas counterattacked after a Washington turnover on a failed entry. Jason Robertson (2nd) cleaned up a rebound at the doorstep, assisted by Roope Hintz and Wyatt Johnston. Miro Heiskanen triggered the attack with a good lead pass.

At 17:19 of the second period, Washington went back ahead to stay on a fluke goal by Raddysh. A failed clear up high was kept in by Raddysh and the player simply flipped a seeing-eye prayar at the net from just inside the point. The unassisted goal found its way past Casey DeSmith (20-saves on 23 shots).

The Stars were unable to find an equalizer in the third period as Lindgren made 10 saves to nail down the victory.

Now 4-1-0, the Stars will head home to Dallas. They'll host the defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers (2-3-0) on Saturday before head back east to visit the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins next Tuesday and Thursday.
