Yesterday, on the TSN show Overdrive, Philadelphia flyers GM, Danny Briere, was asked about tanking or rebuilding.. Danny is a friend of hockeybuzz and a reader and this is your chance to respond to his response below. Personally, I think he’s dead on right. I think it’s always missed by fans that tanking breeds a losing atmosphere, and we’ve seem plenty of examples: In Toronto they have only won a single playoff series, in how many years? And how long did it take Edmonton to become competitive after tanking for years? And look at Buffalo? Tanking is not the answer. I agree with the Briere. You?
Danny Briere:
Well, I think everybody wants more star power, and we all want the Connor McDavid and the Auston Matthews, etc. But the reality is those guys are extremely tough to find. There’s a chance that a guy like Michkov could turn into close to a star or a superstar, but otherwise you need depth throughout your lineup. You need your young players to become really good players. It feels like we’re trending in that direction but there’s still a long way to go. I think consistency is probably one of our toughest things as a young guy, as a young player to find and to get and we see that. We see that on a nightly basis. For us you always have two or three guys that are not going. To become a good team I think that’s one of the things we’re gonna need. It’s so tough. You look at the teams that are stuck at the bottom of the standings – it’s so tough to get out of it. That was part of why we talked about the rebuild. We didn’t want to fall all the way down to the bottom. We wanted to stay competitive and have our young guys learning through a competitive team and a team that has a chance to win and make the playoffs, because it’s so tough to get out of there.
What say you?
