Flyers Had to Part Ways with Shaw. Agree?

Like many others, I genuinely admire Brad Shaw. Among all the coaches I’ve encountered, I believe he stands out for his exceptional ability to connect with players. His approach was particularly effective with certain defensemen, such as Risto and Drysdale.

While it’s common for head coaches to maintain some assistants from the previous regime, I personally find this approach often ineffective. It’s all about building relationships, and I’ve already developed a deep bond with Shaw and several other players. This personal connections the old coach has, makes it challenging for the head coach to fully comprehend the dynamics of the team. This approach can have both advantages and disadvantages, but inevitably, the Flyers players and prospects have to enter training camp with a certain level of uncertainty because they’re unfamiliar with the new head coach.

Tocchet, on the other hand, will undoubtedly bring his own expertise to the table. While his reputation has been somewhat exaggerated on the internet, it’s important to remember that he’s a coach, and his experience is relevant to the current situation in Philly. Whether he played for the Flyers in his hometown is irrelevant; it doesn’t negate his ability to be a successful coach or teacher.

Tocchet will likely bring in someone like Luke Richardson to handle the defense, and Richardson is another ex-Flyer who has proven himself to be a great coach. He’s been successful on various teams and in different situations throughout the NHL. His reputation is that of a very stern, no nonsense guy who understands the defensive end of the defense as well as the offensive end.

Additionally, you’re referring to two of the toughest nose guys who ever played in Philadelphia. Players highly respect their histories and toughness. That matters a lot.

I have no doubt that Shaw will find a new position and continue to excel as a coach. However, even he would likely acknowledge that he wasn’t the best fit for this particular group moving forward.
