Ducks announce season-opening roster, claim James Reimer off waivers

The Anaheim Ducks announced their season-opening roster today, featuring 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders.

Up front, there weren't really any surprises. The Ducks’ 13 forwards are as follows: Leo Carlsson, Robby Fabbri, Cutter Gauthier, Ross Johnston, Alex Killorn, Brett Leason, Isac Lundestrom, Brock McGinn, Mason McTavish, Ryan Strome, Troy Terry, Frank Vatrano and Trevor Zegras.

On the blue line, it’s a similar story, where six defenders were basically already penciled in for a roster spot: Brian Dumoulin, Cam Fowler, Radko Gudas, Jackson LaCombe, Pavel Mintyukov, and Urho Vaakanainen. Then to round out the group, Olen Zellweger wasn’t a surprise, but the notable addition is Tristan Luneau. If the team’s goal is to get both Zellweger and Luneau into game action rather than have either sitting in the press box, it creates a bit of a crowd on the back end. We can expect that Vaakanainen will start as a spare, but it means one of the other seven is going to be out of the lineup as well, assuming the Ducks opt for a 12F/6D lineup.

Then in goal, Lukas Dostal will be the go-to guy to start the year, but with John Gibson injured, the team claimed James Reimer off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres.

It’s a solid waiver pick-up for the Ducks, to add some stability while Gibson is out. Reimer posted a .904 save percentage over 25 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season, and can be a decent backup option for Dostal for the time being.

The Ducks open their season on Saturday against the San Jose Sharks.
