The Los Angeles Kings announced today that they’ve named Jim Hiller as their full-time head coach.

Hiller had taken over as the team’s interim head coach in February, following the firing of Todd McLellan. Prior to taking over, Hiller had been an assistant coach with the Kings since 2022.

After taking over for McLellan, Hiller led the Kings to a 21-12-1 record, with a .632 points percentage. In naming him as full-time head coach, the Kings also signed Hiller to a three-year contract extension, according to Kevin Weekes.

It’ll be interesting to see what Hiller’s able to do in a larger sample size with the Kings, but his results after taking over this season were somewhat mixed. He was able to get Los Angeles back on track after a pretty terrible midseason slump, but scoring issues persisted despite a lot of talent within the forward group.

Still, the decision doesn’t come as much of a surprise, with reports over the last week or two suggesting Hiller would retain his role. But in going with him over some other strong coaching candidates available this summer, Kings' management has to have quite a bit of confidence in Hiller’s ability to steer the ship.
