Kings re-sign David Rittich

The Los Angeles Kings signed goaltender David Rittich to a one-year contract extension yesterday, carrying a $1 million cap hit.

Rittich was originally signed by the team last summer as a free agent. The netminder began the season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, but joined the Kings following an injury to Pheonix Copley. Rittich found some success from there, posting a .921 save percentage across 24 games with Los Angeles.

With all of Rittich, Copley and Cam Talbot set to become unrestricted free agents this summer, extending Rittich provides a bit of stability in goal. With Los Angeles likely to seek an upgrade in net this summer, Rittich could take the role as the team’s backup next season. That said, the cap hit is low enough to bury if needed, in the case he were to end up as the third goalie.

It’s a low-risk move for the Kings, where they could get decent value out of Rittich for the price.
