A quick check on Axel Sandin-Pellikka ended up being a nice surprise this morning. The defenseman now leads the team in points with 18 points in 21 games. At 6 goals, he is second with two players tied at 7 scored. In short, it looks like the 19 year old is having a good year playing for last year’s SHL champions.

You can scroll down and see that newly drafted Michael Brandsegg-Nygard has had a bit of a slower start and in 13 games has 3 goals and 3 assists. While I was anxious to see him on North American ice, MBN’s decision to stay with the team after a special allowance let him get into the preseason games with Detroit may have been a good one. For Axel, it feels like the time is quickly coming where the right shot Dman acquired with a pick from the Hronek deal with Vancouver is ready to hit the ice in North America.

The hope is that ASP will join the team once his season is completed, and maybe bring MBN with him. In Sandin-Pellikka’s case it feels like the ceiling of SHL development is nigh, and the speed and strength of the North American game should be on his radar. Both he and MBN are signed to their ELC.

The question will be, as usual, can Axel hit the ice in Detroit or will he need some seasoning in Grand Rapids. We’ll likely find out for certain around year’s end and the upcoming draft. Until then, it’s exciting to have a developing Dman topping the points total on his SHL team. Let me know your thoughts and comments. I hope to cover Augustine and Savage in the coming week or so in communicating with the coaches at MSU. Augustine is highly thought of and will be a welcome addition when he goes pro.
