Red Wings rebuild by the numbers. Can McLellan help the team level up? |

To get a “mile high view”, the past few days have been spent going through some of the highs and lows of the rebuild. Unfortunately, due to the first two seasons being shortened, there were some anomalies in terms of points, so I pitted full year to full year. You can see the summary of best v. Worst (with points being the comparison of only the full seasons) but the other stats felt like there was enough information available to go ahead and list them.
The other issue was pre-McLellan vs post - McLellan. The new coach had a win percentage of 52.7% (according to the Fan Duel crew, I came up with 53% you’ll see below) while LaLonde left with just 13 wins leading up to the Christmas break (17 losses, 4 OTL and a win percentage of 38%). McLellan had a near impossible task and a brutal return from the break killed the incredible momentum the team had after the leadership change.
Below are the numbers (as best as I’ve been able to lay them out). Enjoy!
LaLonde:
October - 4-5-1
November - 6-6-1
December - 3-5-2
Total - 13-16-4 - 30 points in 33 games 36% wins (4 points for getting to OT or SO)
McLellan:
December - 2-1-0
January - 10-3-1
February - 5-2-1
March - 4-10-0
April - 5-2-2
Total - 26-18-4 - 56 points in 49 games
53% W + 5 points for SO/OTL loss
Obviously, even with the post 4 nations crash, if the team had played at 53% (plus 9 points for OTL/SO loss) would see 95 to 96 points for the season and it’s a much different outcome. There’s also the question of if that’s the reality of what would have played out had McLellan been “the guy” from the start.
It’s all food for thought, but hope that it is at least worthy of some insight. Thanks to all who drop in! Let me know your thoughts. There are, of course, changes in every blogosphere so each of these is a blessed opportunity for me to be a part of. I am truly grateful for each of you and for the time we’ve spent during this rebuild!
