The power play and the goalie. It almost sounds like a fairy tale. In the case of tonight’s game, it was the story. Ironically, the power play factored into all 3 goals. Tuch made a beautiful takeaway that turned into a short handed 1 on 0 and finished with a far side wrister as Larkin watched that turnover turn into a goal against. The captain made good on it.

Two power play goals put Larkin at 7 goals on the season, 5 of them on the man advantage. He’s learned to rip the puck quickly in the bumper/slot/side position. Heading into the 3rd, the captain was at 73% in the faceoff dot. Good things were happening.

The third was a weathering of the storm. If this were a Buffalo write up, it would be a goalie steal mixed with some misses as the Sabres kept Detroit Hemmed into their own zone for long stretches.

It was brought up that, at this point, Detroit had been outshot in all but 2 games. We’ve talked about that at length. Talbot certainly earned his star with 31 saves on 32 shots. Larkin’s acknowledgement of the 3rd period issues was refreshing to hear. Yes, you’re glad for the points, but you know you need to fix an issue.

I have to give credit to Kane’s assist on one of those goals. He literally slapped the puck off of a buffalo stick and it ended up on Larkin’s tape and in the net. It was a quick and nice play. Also credit to Debrincat for taking a hit to cancel an icing after Detroit had iced the puck for the 3rd or 4th time in that sequence. That was a gutsy play.

Let me know your thoughts, and why the power play has started kicking in more recently. The shot differential still needs to be addressed, but there were some good signs. Buffalo will clearly be feeling like one was stolen, and it would be hard to argue. This was a big win for the Wings and a tough loss for the Sabres.

1st Period goals:

Tuch scored for BUF short handed at 11:39. 1-0 BUF

Shots: 13-7 BUF
Score: 1-0 BUF

2nd Period goals:

Larkin gets the team on the board with another power play goal at 7:49. Kane knocked the puck off of a Buffalo stick, it bounced to Larkin who was standing to the left of the net. The captain quickly shot it in to tie up the game. 1-1

With 5:22 left in the 2nd Larkin strikes again on the power play as Debrincat found the captain in the slot for a bar down shot. Raymond w 2nd assist.

Shots: 19-16 BUF
Score: 2-1 DET

3rd Period goals:

Shots: 32-23 BUF
Score: 2-1 DET
