Dubas has kick started things off today by moving Anthony Beauvillier to a rival franchise, the Washington Capitals. Right now, the Capitals are buyers and the Penguins are sellers. They aren’t particularly close in the standings. Perhaps in yesteryear this would be crazy to see these two teams do business, but times they are a changing.

Beauvillier had a decent enough season with the Penguins. Being in Pittsburgh rehabbed his quality of play and saw him put up respectable depth numbers. You can see his performance tick up this season. Thus, making him a trade target on deadline day.

The return for Beauvillier was very good, dare I say excellent. The Penguins will land a 2025 second round pick. So the Anthony Beauvillier signing was 100% a success for Kyle Dubas and the Penguins. This is a complete sellers market and this is a great job moving a pending UFA.

The Penguins already had the most picks in rounds 1-3 the next three years and they just added to it. The strategy Dubas has implemented has been very successful so far. By stockpiling these kinds of assets it makes it likelier for the Penguins to go out and trade for younger cost controlled players. When you have few picks you have fewer options (duh). I love the idea of stockpiling more and more picks and then going on a shopping spree with them. They have the cap space and now they have a growing pile of draft capital. This is how you retool/rebuild on the fly.

Great start to the trade deadline for Dubas. Now go move Grzcelyk and take advantage of a desperate contender with a Rakell deal.
