The latest round of housekeeping from Bruins general manager Don Sweeney came with the handling of two restricted free agents, with defensemen Michael Callahan and Alec Regula both signed to one-year, two-way deals Friday morning.
Both Callahan and Regula will have league minimum $775,000 cap hits at the NHL level.
A Franklin, Mass. native, Callahan’s re-signing with the Bruins comes following a 2023-24 campaign that included career-bests in goals (four), assists (13), points (17), and games played (70). The left-shooting Callahan, who stands at 6-foot-2, was originally acquired by the Bruins in a 2022 trade with the Coyotes, with the B’s sending a seventh-round pick to Arizona to acquire his exclusive rights before signing him.
Callahan, who played at Providence College before joining the Bruins, has compiled six goals and 27 points in 140 total games with AHL Providence, and could be one of the ‘first men up’ in 2024-25 should a rash of injuries strike the B’s blue line.
Regula, meanwhile, will stick around after a 2023-24 season that came with an AHL-best plus-36 rating for the P-Bruins. In addition to that aforementioned plus-minus, Regula posted four goals and 26 points, and landed 64 shots on goal, in 55 games for Ryan Mougenel’s squad.
The 6-foot-4 Regula was originally picked up in the B’s 2023 trade that sent Taylor Hall and the exclsuive free-agent rights to Nick Foligno to the Blackhawks. A third-round pick of Detroit back in 2018, Regula has made 22 career NHL appearances, but has yet to draw into an NHL game for Boston.
With Callahan and Regula signed, forward Marc McLaughlin and goaltender Jeremy Swayman are the last remaining restricted free agents left for the Bruins to sign this offseason.
