The Hawks announced today that they have signed veteran forward Nick Foligno to a two-year, $9 million contract extension. While many people will laugh and think that this is an overpay by the Hawks for a player who will be turning 37 early next season, this is a good move by the Hawks. This takes care of a few things this team needs to address for next season. The first is the obvious one of helping them get closer to the cap floor. The cap is going up, and they only have 10 players signed for next season. If you are going to overpay someone, it should be a player you are familiar with. Which brings me to point two: in just 39 games this season, he has shown why he is one of the most liked players among his former teammates. The leadership he brings to this team has many viewing him as the unofficial captain of this team. He has been a great mentor for Bedard so far, and now he will have two more years to really help guide Bedard into his captaincy role.

I am really happy to see the Hawks make an effort to keep Foligno around, and even happier that Foligno is willing to wind his career down in this rebuild situation. When the Hawks decided to move on from the Toews and Kane era, it was hard to imagine this team would find a player who could really mentor the next generation of Blackhawks, but I believe Kyle Davidson really nailed it on the head with Foligno. I am really looking forward to seeing where this team is once this deal comes to an end.
